Headstone Inscriptions: 80 Ideas and Wording
A headstone inscription is the shortest thing you will ever write and the one that lasts longest. Most families have weeks or months to decide — the stone is usually set two to three months after burial — so there is no need to rush it in the first week.
The standard structure
- A leading phrase — "In Loving Memory Of", "Beloved Wife and Mother", or nothing at all
- Full name — usually including a nickname in quotes if they were known by one
- Dates — birth and death; some families use only years
- Relationship line — "Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather"
- The epitaph — one to three lines

Reflecting who they were
The inscriptions families end up loving most are rarely from a list. They are a phrase the person actually used, or a plain description of what they did:
- "Put the kettle on"
- Teacher. Gardener. Grandmother.
- He fixed everything

What to check before you commit
- Cemetery rules. Many restrict stone type, size, colour, and sometimes wording or symbols. Get the regulations in writing before ordering — this is the most common cause of a rejected design.
- Character allowance and cost per extra character. Ask before choosing a verse.
- Spelling, in writing. Approve a printed proof, not a phone conversation. Recarving is expensive and often impossible.
- Space for a spouse if it is a double stone. Leave the second set of dates blank and confirm the layout allows for them.
- Timing. Most cemeteries require the ground to settle for two to three months before setting a stone, and engraving takes weeks on top. There is genuinely no rush.

What do you write on a headstone?
Typically a leading phrase such as "In Loving Memory Of", the full name, the dates, a relationship line like "Beloved Wife and Mother", and a short epitaph of one to three lines.
How many characters fit on a headstone?
Most upright headstones allow three to five lines of inscription beneath the name and dates, at roughly 20 to 30 characters per line. Flat markers hold considerably less — ask the monument company for the exact allowance.
How long after burial is a headstone placed?
Usually two to three months. Most cemeteries require the ground to settle before a stone can be set, and engraving itself takes several weeks — so there is time to choose the wording carefully.
Can a headstone inscription be changed later?
Rarely, and never cheaply. Adding a line — such as a spouse's dates on a double stone — is normally possible, but correcting an error usually means recarving or replacing the stone. Approve a written proof before it goes to the engraver.
What is a good short epitaph?
"Forever in our hearts", "Always loved, never forgotten", "Until we meet again" and "A life well lived" are the most used and all fit comfortably. A phrase the person actually said is often better than any of them.
